About Me

So who is the amazing individual behind this fundraiser? (Obviously a modest one)

My name is Lara Marks-Nash. I grew up in Canberra and after finishing high school I worked as a travel agent, and then did an extended ‘gap year’ overseas. I have always loved travelling and so far have visited 17 countries in 4 continents. Choosing a favourite place is impossible – my top three are magical Reykyavik, the stunning highlands of Scotland and the ever-energetic and vibrant New York City. My favourite part of travelling (apart from the food, as my friends would know) is connecting with people – especially through travel networks such as Couchsurfing, WWOOFing and Helpx – and sharing our similarities and differences.

How did this fundraiser come about? I was reading the newsletter of JustGiving, a UK-based online fundraiser website. After reading through their summary of the most creative fundraisers they’ve had in the last 3 years, I was inspired. Fundraising doesn’t have to be boring or guilt-driven. It can be about doing something you love, getting other people to enjoy it too, and the bonus of the doantions helping out others in the world. So I sat there that night, after reading the newsletter, wondering how I could make my love of travel and impending Australian trip a fundraiser?….Oh, postcards! An idea was born.

When I’m not off travelling Australia or the world, I enjoy stimulating conversation over coffee, trying out foods I’ve never heard of, eating fruit in the sun, reading about people who defy the odds, and hip-hop/street dancing (usually in my kitchen).

    Hi Lara!
Do you remember me? I taught you way back in the 90s at Primary School! I support Shelter Box and receive their updates on Facebook, so imagine my surprise when your name was right there on my screen with details of your fundraiser. I’ve just been looking at your website and it all looks fantastic – such a brilliant idea! It was also lovely to read a bit about what you’ve been up to; I often wonder what you all ended up doing.
I would love a postcard and will definitely donate to support you.
Give my regards to your parents and I wish you safe travels and the best of luck. Well done!
    Alex (Sneddon/Kain)
